I went to 2 preliminary showcases for this ongoing competition and it’s only befitting that I checked out the main event culminating at the Henry Fonda Theater in Hollywood. The HFT is a beautiful theater with an elaborate history.

Here’s something from their website:

One of Hollywood’s first legitimate theatres, the Henry Fonda Theatre experienced a variety of incarnations during the 1920s, ’30s and ’40s as part of an entertainment district of exceptional quality and diversity.

The theatre first opened its doors as the Carter DeHaven Music Box Theatre on October 18, 1926 as a place where performers such as Fannie Brice appeared in elaborate musical revues designed to rival the Ziegfield Follies. Upstairs, above the theatre in this beautiful Spanish Colonial style building, theatre-goers could enjoy dancing and cabaret acts after the show.

Within a year, however, revues were replaced by legitimate stage shows like Chicago with Clark Gable and Dracula with Bela Lugosi, which coincided with a burgeoning of live theatre across the city.

In 1936, as radio became the dominant force in entertainment, the Hollywood Music Box (as it was then called) became the home of the popular weekly series, The Lux Radio Theatre. At one time or another, luminaries like Marlene Dietrich, Al Jolson, Joan Crawford, James Cagney, Barbara Stanwyck, Gary Cooper, Jean Harlow and others all graced the Music Box stage performing in these live radio dramas. The Music Box returned to legitimate shows briefly in the 1940s, highlighted by an extensive run of Life With Father in 1942. By 1945, its name was changed, once again, to The Guild (and later to The Fox) when live entertainment gave way to the movies. One of Hollywood’s foremost movie houses, it was most recently known as The Pix and, in its final format, featured Spanish-language films.

In an effort to redevelop Hollywood as a legitimate Entertainment District, the new owners; Thad Smith, Marco Roy and Burt Nelson, decided to recapture the magic of the Music Box by restoring it to a grander showplace for Events and live stage presentations.

The newly refurbished Henry Fonda Theatre has been the home to many Broadway productions, including Driving Miss Daisy, My Children, My Africa, Glengary Glen Ross, Don Juan in Hell, Lend Me a Tenor, Nunsense, Tru, Family Secrets, Kathy and Mo, and Party. The legendary Henry Fonda Theatre has also been home to some of the preeminent names of the concert stage, including Tori Amos, Adam Ant, Sandra Bernhard, Marianne Faithful, Jane’s Addiction, Cyndi Lauper, Denis Leary, Charlie Watts Quintet, Ray Davies, and the Spin Doctors

Okay..Groovy stuff… Check out the pix I took of Al Bowman, sort of "throning" in this amazingly ornate balcony above the audience, having a "pensive moment". Al Bowman is the organizer of this event that has been going on for 14 years. He’s a funny dude. Always a plastic smile ready when he knows the cameras are going, he nevertheless works hard to keep order in the house.

This was a sold out event. I was invited, courtesy of Female Singer and FemMuser Ms. Deborah Bishop who was nominated for an award that night and is a member of FemMuse. The place was packed… upstairs and downstairs. Great to run into more women musicians who are part of FemMuse like Dina Garthe and Gilli Moon (pictured above during a cozy Kodak moment) and Toni Koch… and Denise Vasquez who were hanging out having a great time.

Evidently there was chaos backstage and some scheduling problems occurred. Acts were running late and many of the winners announced weren’t to be found. Al Bowman. rushed about 20 or so nominees thru the announcements and half of them weren’t ready to hit the stage. Female Singer and FemMuser Jennifer Applequist was there however, took her award, thanked everyone and was super cool as always. I like that cute face she makes as I shot that pix.

And geez.. did those tequilas wreck my brain I downed with Toni Koch… my otherwise "pure" system didn’t like them so I had to leave earlier than I wanted to… But I think I left "gracefully" LOL .. at least until otherwise proven.

Kelly Cox from KLOS was presenting the Shep Gordon award to Trevor Rabin, who has scored many a motion picture. Kelly and I hung out afterwards and bonded. She knew all about FemMuse

The bands were slamming, the crowd was jumping, the drinks were strong and I gotta say that this was a cool night. When I walked in they showed a video of our very own Kathryn Grimm when she was in some sort of metal phase….singing and being a Female Metal Guitarist. Very nice surprise.

Congratulations to all the winners. Remember: "everyone’s a winner babe.. that’s no lie".. old disco song from the ’70….you all won, even if you didn’t walk away with a trophy.

The FemMuse Team wants to thank everyone for putting on such a cool event. You all rock!!! Special thanks to Bridget Brigitte and Jean Pierre for their support, help and organization.

What can I say…. just another happening FemMuse show…. this time in San Diego at Humphrey’s Lounge. Kudos to Bridget for suggesting this great place and for helping to put this all together. Fantastic. Humphrey’s is situated at the San Diego Bay (Shelter Island) and we were overlooking hundreds of sail boats and a blue skye (at least when I got there…)

The evening started off with the acoustic hour The FemGems. Julie-Marie and Makeda, two african american female singers started off the night… just acapella… and promptly brought the house down!! Suggested by Bridget, they turned out to be the perfect beginning for an evening packed with great bands. Get them to L.A…quick… It was nice to meet some of the long time FemMusers from San Diego for the first time in person and hearing them perform. Mary Dolan.. girl.. she tore it up and she’s been with this group from the beginning. Finally we were able to connect. I love ya girl. Same for Wendy Bailey. Great stuff. And the newer FemMusers i.e. Michele Shipp, Lauren De Rose, Steph Johnson – nice sets by everyone. We’ll keep a lookout for ya in L.A.

One of the surprise last minute additions to the FemGems was female guitarist Jocelyn Celaya, an acoustic guitarist who just flew in from Oklahoma to spend a day or two in SD and had asked me if she could play a song. I said yes, and was I glad I did. She played acoustic guitar (no vocals), a mix of flamenco, finger-picking blues, classical, rock etc.etc. all with hammer-ons, tapping and what have you. We were on the floor. How cool was that?

Moving right along in the program was Bridget Brigitte who performed this time with a full band… and by full I mean FULL…… about 10 people, including a guy who used the little harp you put in your mouth that makes funny sounds… whatever you call it. Mesmerizing and creative music emanated from the stage with Bridget chiming and singing beautifully. She was partially backed up by Simply Complex, a band that has its own repertoire and they gave us a taste of that as well. Fronted by female bassist/singer Lauren their material reminded me of a mix between pop meets funk with a generous dash of rock.

Following Bridget’s big spectacle was Josie’s Ghost. I’ve met some of the members before who had come to the Hard Rock Shows and I’ve always liked their personalities. JG was great on stage. Nice vocal arrangements and cool and quirky songs with tribal drumming…. as Bridget told me: they all sing in the symphony… no wonder. I loved it and the crowd loved it. We want more JG..

Hydroplane hit the stage after JG and continued on with the momentum. A female bass player, about 4 feet 11, which a huge Rickenbacker bass bigger than she is, powerhouse riffs, female drummer and soaring guitarist, they did intricate and involved rock’n roll. People came out saying: I like this band.. and so did I. Met the mom and friends of the bass player who are all music people with a history… very cool.

Female Guitarist The Shredmistress took the stage and jammed on a couple of tunes with Reggie Mars on bass and Artie Rowe on drums. Guitar masturbation from this female guitarist put the event into higher gear, and loving every single guitar minute of it! Massive shredding was done on a Burns Flyte guitar, "Shreddie’s" guitar of choice these days.

Skye followed the Shred Mistress and these three ladies rocked on. Michaela and consorts were adorable and put out some great grooves. It was cool to finally connect with them.

BTW: this is one of the few FemMuse shows where we ran right on schedule (okay.. by the end of the night we were 15 minutos behind)… thanks again to Bridget and her "stage management" skills and also to ALL the artists who played sets within their time frames, had their equipment up and running promptly and used what was provided to a great degree. Made for a very smooth night.

The all female band: Abigail’s Attic took the stage. They had played for us at the Derby a year ago so I knew some of the members. The band was good before but they were even better now. Loved the singer who doubled on sax and flute plus the bass player was neat to look at… nice stage image. Did I mention that they are all women?

Closing out the night… drum roll please… was our token boy band… JIGGAWATT…Cool bunch of guys, They hammered home some amazing rock and funk, interspersed with Motown….. The Shredmistress sat in on their last song ( a cover of Hendrix’ Voodoo Child) and together they managed to turn that into a spacey, acid rock, funk, metal, conglomerate. I hope Hendrix didn’t turn over in his grave LOL

Everybody got along and had fun. The spirit of musicians coming together and jamming was held up admirably. What a great night. Thanks again to everyone, musicians, audience, organizers.

"Female Musicians find their common chord" To counter the isolating feeling of playing L.A. clubs. Founded by Female Guitarist Shredmistress Rynata

The statuesque female guitarist known as Shredmistress Rynata got a start that was anything but auspicious when she moved to L.A. from San Francisco with the idea of boosting her musical career. "When I started playing in L.A. it was the worst," Rynata says. "You hit the stage and you have nothing in common with the other bands. No one talks to each other and we’re all isolated. Then you get rushed off the stage and you walk away feeling like, ‘Why did I do this?’ I didn’t get paid, hardly anybody was there. Nobody cared. I wanted to break through that."

After a particularly discouraging night
she went to a talented gal pal’s otherwise empty gig — Rynata decided to do something about it. "We were driving after the show and my friend was extremely distraught," says Rynata, a member of the heavy-rock group Glamazon. "I said ‘Stop the car, I have an idea.’ I decided that we had to learn how to work together, to network, to do something else other than just fending for ourselves."

FemMuse was born.

Years later, the local organization continues to unite, promote and generally champion female musicians through its Web site — FemMuse.com which features online chats and message boards, job opportunities, services and referrals — and regular shows around town. Lately, FemMuse has attracted a sizable following at the Derby in Los Feliz. "It’s about time the women get their night in the spotlight," says Derby co-owner Tammi Gower. "A girl’s gotta rock somewhere."

The diverse musical gatherings feature everything from country to folk (usually the first hour is slotted for acoustic acts) to funk, and to the Shredmistress’ territory: full-on heavy metal, climaxing with a wild jam session with other FemMuse members. The group’s next informal jam is slated for May 31 at Manny’s Music, and its next full-evening performance is June 11 at the Hard Rock Cafe in Beverly Center.

Rynata’s FemMuse co-directors, Kathryn Grimm and Eileen Carey, are examples of the group’s idea of community. Both front bands with male musicians backing them, they represent different musical genres and both found FemMuse at a time when they needed an extra dose of inspiration.

"I was surfing on the Net and I ended up on the FemMuse site," says Grimm, who has been playing around L.A. for 15 years in such acts as the Screamin’ Sirens, as well as teaching music. "We started corresponding and I came to a show. There were a lot of women performers and cool people, and it got me excited about booking shows again."

Carey met Rynata one night when she was passing out fliers (FemMuse promotes both its own shows and those of individual members). "We started to talk about networking and shows, " Carey says. "I wanted to not only get musicians more involved, but also bring in the industry more."

Though FemMuse has yet to snag any superstar performers or label interest, their strong member roster includes some real up-and-comers as well as endorsements from ex-Romeo Void singer Debora Iyall and producer Mary Guibert (Jeff Buckley’s mom), clubs including the Derby, and several area companies (all of which donate to FemMuse’s raffle giveaways at shows).

"It’s an alien concept here, this whole networking and jamming thing," Rynata says. But thanks to promotion, the disheartening experience her friend endured is starting to change. The musician feels that FemMuse still has a ways to go. "There’s still prejudice against women musicians, especially those over 30," she says. "We’re just starting to bridge the gap."

One of the most amazing women music conferences took place in Seattle! Here are some pictures and impressions. Kudos to Carla DeSantis, the founder of Rockrgrl and organizer of this humongous event.

Patti Smith
the legendary female punk singer was one of the highlights. Appearing with her was longtime guitarist Lenny Kaye. A special dinner was held in her honor in the downstairs ballroom at the Renaissance Hotel, which was packed with her fans. Patti Smith and Lenny Kaye performed a set of acoustic songs filled with Patti’s trademark vocal style. What a treat that was. She also addressed the conference the next morning as the keynote speaker. A rapt audience listened to Patti Smith’s speech, filled with memories from her past, present political statements, and the usual ramblings she’s known for. I walked away with the feeling that here is a true individual who has stuck to her beliefs throughout her career. Truly remarkable.

Johnette Napolitano
founder, singer, bassist of "Concrete Blonde" was one of the keynote speakers at the conference. I’ve been a fan of Concrete Blonde and her for a long time and it was great to see her in person and hear her speak. She was funny, wise and full of insight and offered advice and support to the many questions that were directed at her from audience members. She kindly posed for the picture above with moi and Jennifer Corday. At one point the discussion turned into a "recording forum" since Johnette is an avid home recordist and has quite the studio. The Shredmistress and her got into it since that’s one of my passions. Too cool for words.

Chris Williamson
above, the legendary feminist folk singer. The Shredmistress met her in the elevator and had the pleasure of chatting with this amazing woman. She posed for this cool head shot. Chris Williamson was the featured guest at one of the many workshops held "Thirty Years of the Changer and the Changed", hosted by author/journalist Ann Powers.

Violinist / Guitarist / Singer Lourds
was someone I had wanted to see live. She comes from NYC and here was my chance. Playing an awesome set at the cavernous Room 7 club in Seattle, she was brilliant. Heavy rock with finesse, she took no prisoners. Her vocals are stellar and she plays some decent guitar. But her violin solos are what got me. Plus she’s the ultimate performer. Too bad there weren’t that many people there. Considering that there were simultaneous events going on in about a dozen other venues, there were just too many choices.

Switchblade Kittens
was there in full attendance, playing a showcase as well. Always their "outrageous" selves, they were so much fun and colorful as well.

Jennifer Corday and the Shredmistress….
Jennifer invited me at the last minute to sit in with her at the LGBT Center in Seattle and girl… did I bite on that one. I borrowed the Minarik Inferno guitar from the exhibition and went to town with Jennifer on her last two songs. Thanks for asking Jenn and YOU ROCK!

Discussion Panels everywhere. I was invited to participate in one. Topic: "Where have all the Shredders gone" moderated by Alice Stuart. Panelists included moi, Shaunna Hall, Shelly Doty and Janet Robin. Great discussions went on about "when to shred and when not"…

Shaunna Hall, Christa Hillhouse (ex 4 Non Blondes)
played with drummer Stephanie Eulinberg (Kid Rock). I got there too late since the show times had been changed from the official program I had. However… having known Shaunna and Christa for a long time, it was great seeing them again. And also seeing Stephanie who I’d met earlier that day in a workshop I attended. We had a blast hanging out at the bar, drinking a few and bonding. Shaunna Hall has a project called "Electrofunkadelica", resides part time in Spain and is rocking along. Mucho history here.

There was so much going on in those three days but I can’t forget seeing Bonnie Raitt and Ann Wilson of Heart together in front of a full house of attentive women, bantering back and forth. They were too cool. Great to see those two super divas lending their services to this convention.

There wasn’t a shred of competitive spirit but only the spirit of sharing, hanging out, making friends and networking. That’s the way it should be!

I could go on and on about the people I’ve met, re-met, connected with, made friends with (Vickie Blankenship and Cory of Indiegrl… you rule…thanks for letting me share your hotel room)… Minarik Guitars… you guys/girls did yourselves proud.. Nikkie O’Neil who was there with Electro Harmonics, on panels, and in the next booth to the Minarik folks…, Amanda Rootes and Annette Conlon who worked hard during the conference and shared their cabs and were so much fun to hang out with… and last but not least: the fantastic Carla DeSantis who put all this together because SHE HAD A VISION! I think I’ll leave it right here. It was an amazing experience and I will always remember it.
